Company profile

Westcotec thrive on innovation, relishing the challenge of bringing new approaches to old problems. Alongside traditional speed limit warning signs the company produces very specialist devices including , Road Flood Warning and Bridge Height Warning systems and Collision Avoidance System.

Westcotec manufacture in their own factory based in Norfolk, utilising high quality, rigorously tested components. The single site for Manufacture, Technical Support, Research, Development, Sales and Marketing provides an ability to react swiftly to customer’s requirements particularly in the more specialist areas, this flexibility has led to custom in not only in the UK but also across Northern Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

They are one of only a few to have obtained the required CE mark for their VAS products. Westcotec has pioneered alternative energy with wind and solar options, available throughout most of its product range. Westcotec are determined to reduce their carbon footprint so for every sign sold a tree is planted in the company owned woodland, to date this numbers in excess of 8000 trees.

Products

HGV Real-time Height Display

Bridge strikes are a common occurrence and one that can easily be avoided if drivers knew their exact height on a daily basis.

Westcotec designed, manufacture and install a HGV measurement device coupled with an electronic sign that displays the height in real-time in any required format such as feet and inches.

When a driver stops at a pre-determined point, the trailer height is measured from an above gantry or cantilever post where the measurement device is mounted.

The measurement is transmitted to the electronic LED sign instantaneously, providing the height of the trailer to the driver.

Equipped with this information, drivers are able to take the necessary action to avoid incidents involving height restrictions.

Vehicle Activated Speed Signs

Westcotec Ltd’s range of speed signs have been proven to reduce vehicle speeds.
The sign only activates when a speeding vehicle is detected.

Our signs are lightweight, making it possible to fit them unobtrusively into the most sensitive of areas.
They can be easily fitted to existing sites and street light columns.

The light sensor adjusts to ambient light levels, reducing output at night to maintain contrast, cutting out unwanted light pollution – major nuisance to residents.

All of our Speed signs come with optional data collection function which shows date, time and vehicle speeds including count over a day, week, month, year or hourly and is downloaded via USB cable to a PC or through Bluetooth to an android device.

Speed Indicator Devices accurately measure the oncoming vehicles speed and displays this value to the driver.

Speed Indicator Devices are cost effective compared with road humps, chicanes and other expensive measures, they pose no problem for emergency vehicles, whilst noise and nuisance are totally absent.

Transport for London Street Management’s Report on the Effectiveness of Speed Indicator Devices Reducing Vehicle Speeds concluded that SIDs are effective at reducing speeds, reducing speeds 200 metres downstream of the sign and a collision reduction of 5.6%.

This report also found that an efficient method of operating Speed Indicator Devices was to rotate them around several sites. Westcotec’s portable Speed Indicator Devices is shown to be ideal.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)

Westcotec have developed a fully portable Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system, which is incredibly efficient in reducing speeds on public roads and also private sites.

The unit can be battery powered, giving it the ability to be moved around multiple locations to obtain maximum benefit and coverage from the ANPR system, however mains and solar powered options are also available. The effectiveness of the Portable ANPR system is highlighted through the use of the number plate images that are stored securely on the unit. Using it’s own wi-fi connection, the unit can connect securely to a laptop and the images can be accessed through our dedicated viewing software. Alternatively, the data can be exported to an excel spreadsheet. This data can then be used to process Speedwatch Warning Letters.

Colour image and black & white image options are both available.

Additionally, the ANPR camera can be coupled with a Speed Indicator Device (SID), which gives the driver a warning as to what speed they are travelling at. This gives an opportunity to speeding motorists to lower their speed from up to 100 metres prior to the SID. If they choose to ignore the message telling them to Slow Down, an image is taken. This has proven to be of particular importance to areas in which locals believe the cameras are ‘out to get them’. With a prior warning before any image is recorded, disagreements are rarely seen.
